Our History

 

Church History Highlights: 

 

  • The Mount Pleasant Baptist Church had its humble beginnings in the early 1900s in a Bush Harbor in Lexington County off Highway 215 on George Taylor’s Place. The first pastor was Reverend Charles W. Young. The first Deacons were: Dave Young, Isaiah Freeman, George Reed, Richard Ravenel, Joe Boozer, Albert Mayes, Tobe Flelder, and Berry Waymer as the clerk.
     

  • From 1939 to 1941, Reverend Wade Ed Wise severed as a pastor and under his pastorialship, Daniel Young was ordained as Deacon. The Willing Workers Club was organized by Eliza Hipps. The club members were: Lula Hopkins, Hattie Waymer, Ruby Hart, Minnie Hopkins, Lizzie Freeman, Sylvia Weston, Evelyn Major, and Maudine Mallory. 

 

  •  From 1941 to 1943, Reverend G. W. Brighthrop served as pastor. During his pastorialship, the Musical Choir was organized by Ruby Hart and the first church musician was Margaret Freeman. During the early 1940s, Carlos Jamison was elected to the Board of Deacons, having been previously ordained by Saint Darcus Baptist Church, North, South Carolina.

 

  • As the church continues to grow, from 1943 to 1945 Reverend A. B Robinson served as pastor. Several clubs and organizations were organized to support the church. Clarence Hopkins was elected as the Choir Director. In 1945, Reverend R. B. Story serviced as a pastor and during his pastorialship, Woodward Hopkins and Robert Alston were ordained as Deacons. From 1954 to 1957, Reverend Jack M. Kelly served as Pastor.

 

  • In 1957, Reverend E. L. Oglesby served as pastor and during his pastorialship, James Anderson was elected to the Board of Deacons, having been previously ordained by Mount Zion Baptist Church, Cayce, South Carolina. From 1959 to 1962, Reverend Eddie Samuel served as Pastor. During his pastorialship, the church was bricked in.

 

  • In 1962, Reverend Moses M. Thompson was called as pastor. Reverend Thompson served for 29years. During his pastorialship, the Deacons were: Daniel Young, Carlos Jamison, Woodard Hopkins, Willie Brown, Clarence Hopkins, James Anderson, and James Blyther. The Trustees were: Charles Melvin, David Earle, Charles Earle, Booker T. Washington, Willie Smith, Jr., and Alexander Washington. The interior of the church was completed, new pews, carpet, lighting, and heating and
    cooling system were installed. Wilbur Daniels was elected to the Board of Deacons, having been previously ordained by New Life Baptist Church, Cayce, South Carolina, and Eugene Porterfield were appointed to the Board of Deacons, having been previously ordained by Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, Swansea, South Carolina.

 

  • In December of 1991, Reverend Moses M. Thompson announced his retirement from pastoring due to health reasons. His retirement became effective on December 22, 1991. An Appreciation Program was held on Sunday, January 5, 1992, at 6:00 P.M. on behalf of Reverend Moses M. Thompson and his wife, Sis. Essie Thompson.

 

  •  On January 11, 1992, a Pastor Search Committee was formed. The committee members were: Deacon Eugene Porterfield – Chairman, Deacon Kenneth B. Waymer, Deacon Daniel Young, Martha Earle, and Rosa Bowman. On July 11, 1992, the members voted Reverend Danny C. Swilley as our pastor. The Installation Service was held for our pastor on September 13, 1992, at 6:00 P.M. 

 

  • Currently, under the pastoral leadership of Reverend Danny C. Swilley, the following members served in the capacity of Clerk – Kimberly Porterfield, Church Secretary/Bookkeeper – Linda Anderson, and Assistant Clerk – Raynah Everett. The General Treasurers and Assistant Treasurers are Vernetta Tillman and Cassandra Chestnut. Deacon Charles J. Lane and Deacon James Tillman serve as Chairman and Co-Chairman of Deacon Board. Our clergy consist of the following members: Reverend S. Michelle Everett,  Reverend Rosetta Boyd, Reverend Kevin Jones, Reverend Herve Gibbons, Minister JoAnn Gibbons, and Elderly DuWayne Nelson.
